The Mindset Shift: From Employee to Entrepreneur
By Maya Bennett
Making the leap from a steady paycheck to running your own business starts in your mind. Here's how to reframe your thinking and build the confidence to go all in.
The leap starts in your mind
The biggest barrier between you and your business isn't money, or time, or even a great idea. It's the story you tell yourself about what you're capable of.
When you've spent years as an employee, your brain gets very good at a specific set of skills: following instructions, seeking approval, avoiding mistakes. Entrepreneurship requires the opposite — self-direction, comfort with uncertainty, and a willingness to get it wrong before you get it right.
Reframe risk
Most people overestimate the risk of starting a business and underestimate the risk of staying somewhere they've stopped growing. The real risk isn't failing — it's looking back wishing you'd tried.
Start before you're ready
You don't need a perfect plan. You need a first step. Start small, validate your idea with real people, and let the path reveal itself as you walk it.
Build your confidence muscle
Confidence isn't a personality trait — it's a habit. Every small win deposits a little more of it into your account. Set tiny goals, hit them, and repeat.
You don't have to be fearless. You just have to be willing to act in spite of the fear.
Surround yourself with people who are a step or two ahead of you. Their normal will become your normal faster than you think.
